Feline Assists Traumatized Student (Or Vice Versa?)

DYSTOPIA–Many people have noticed that a growing number of college students use service dogs, but A Dystopia student might be one of the first to be used by a service cat.

Student Joey DiMarco said a cat wasn’t his first thought either, but that’s just how things turned out after he realized that he needed help dealing with the PTSD-like symptoms that began to develop after he was sexually assaulted by aliens.

“I tried a dog, and he was super-sweet and well trained and everything,” DiMarco said, but he needed a level of emotional commitment that “I just wasn’t ready for so soon after my horrific experience.”

Fortunately, the mental-health counselor whom he was meeting with had read about service cats and “got me connected with the right people.”

The cat he was assigned to serve, a gray tabby named Indie (short for “Independence”) has worked out perfectly because of her “total indifference ” to his needs, which is “much easier to deal with.”
